Frequently Asked Questions

We are so quick to judge ourselves, or find excuses in the search for 'perfection', aren't we? After leaving my chair, my curly clients are so thrilled that they embrace their own personal style with ease and grace, and completely let themselves go.

Some still try to pick apart why they feel something isn't working, or why they haven't achieved that non-existent state of 'perfection'.

First, I tell them to LET GO. That is, after all, the final step in my Curl Cures approach. I give you all the tools you need to embrace your unique curly hair, and then you have to learn to love yourself just as you are.

Although this might take some deeper work (check out my LifeStyle Design programs for more...), I wanted to share my answers to some of the most frequently asked questions I get from my curly clients:

DOES THE OUIDAD GEL DRY MY HAIR OUT?

The answer is no. The alcohol used to set the hair is like that of witch hazel - moisturizing.

SHOULD I USE A POMADE OR A SERUM TO FINISH MY CURLS?

Typically, the pomade is used for coarser textures, and the serum for finer. But once you play with your hair, you'll find what feels better. The pomade is heavier and will slick the halo of frizz down better, and open the curls to make them softer.

WHY DOES OUIDAD'S BOTANICAL BOOST MAKE MY HAIR FRIZZY?

Botanical Boost's active ingredient is aloe very gel and vitamin B5, which is designed to re-coil your curls and add bounce. You can use it as a leave-in conditioner before styling with gel, or to refresh curls the next day, but beware that it is activating the curls which can lead to frizz if you're prone to it, or if misused. Curls that are looser and love humidity will love Botanical Boost. Most others will not.

CAN'T I JUST PUT THE DEEP TREATMENT ON AND SLEEP WITH IT INSTEAD OF USING HEAT?

No. You must use heat for 12 minutes in any of the ways I've mentioned so that it actually works. If you merely put it on without heating it up, you are wasting product. You can however, leave it on after it's been heated up for as long as you'd like.

DO I REALLY HAVE TO USE THAT MUCH PRODUCT TO STYLE MY HAIR? I DON'T LIKE TO USE MUCH.

Ouidad's styling products are very lightweight and won't feel like there's any product in it if styled correctly. But, if you choose to use minimal amounts, just be sure to at least distribute it evenly, breaking it up into at least 4 quadrants so that your application is thorough.

CAN'T I JUST PUT THE GEL IN MY HAIR AND GO TO BED WITH IT WET?

Not if you want it to look good. You must 'set' the hair, remembering that however you position your curls when they're wet, is how they're going to dry. If you were to think about blowing your hair out straight, would you stop midway and go to bed? Probably not, because you'd be left with weird kinks and bends in the hair, unless you dried it completely beforehand.

WHY ARE MY CURLS DRY, FRIZZY, TANGLED, COLLAPSING OR EXPANDING?

Because you need a Deep Treatment! Clients will say they've done one, but when I ask if they are doing it consistently, the answer is usually no. You must do them every 2-4 weeks to reap the benefits!

MY SCALP FEELS DRY AND FLAKY. COULD IT BE BECAUSE OF THE OUIDAD PRODUCTS?

Highly doubtful because they are low sudsing, low pH, and moisturizing. Usually the reason why our scalp becomes dry or flaky is due to an imbalance in the stomach (I can help you with your diet). It could also be that you should shampoo more often - every 2/3 days, and be sure to rinse the scalp really well. Try using this oil treatment to help nourish.

IS IT BAD THAT I LOSE SO MUCH HAIR IN THE SHOWER?

It's normal to have lots of hair come out in the shower because all the hair that naturally sheds, does not slip out of curly hair and onto the floor easily, plus we are also not brushing the hair between shampoos. The hair stays wound around each other until we shampoo and comb it out. If you're one to go more than a few days between shampoos, expect to see a lot come out. *Keep an eye on it if it becomes more than usual though, it could be a sign of a thyroid or hormonal condition*

WHY AREN'T THE OUIDAD CONDITIONER'S HEAVY ENOUGH?

Ouidad created her line to be lightweight, so that the curls are infused with the correct amount of moisturizers and proteins to work from the inside out. Her reasoning is so that the hair has life, body and movement. She never wanted to suppress the curls with extra weight.
