LifeStyle Lessons: Coming Full Circle with Food

Buca's Chicken dishI ate chicken again! I hadn't had it for 5 years! The only animal I've eaten in the past 5 years has been the occasional fish and eggs. I started out Vegan and then became Macrobiotic until I found Ayurveda practices last year! (Life Saver!) My Ayurvedic practitioner advised me last year to eat chicken, according to my Vata-Pitta dosha (mind-body constitution) but I hadn't felt called to eat it until recently. My boyfriend practices the 'Eat Right for your Blood Type' and since we have the same Blood Type (o+) we've had many conversations about the foods that are beneficial for us!

There are so many 'diets' that are helpful, depending on what you want to hear!;) There's the Raw Food diet, Macrobiotics, Ayurveda, Paleo, Blood Type etc...which to follow?! It's really hard to listen to your inner voice when we have all this info, right?! I love Michael Pollen's book, 'In Defense of Food' where he just talks about food as it is: celebratory, comforting, nourishing, enjoyable food; period. Can't we just leave it at that?!

The thing is, most people aren't mindful when it comes to what they put in their mouth though...unfortunately! So, I think the answer really is, everything in moderation...even moderation (as my bf says ;) But honestly, we just have to listen to what our body needs, and what it wants.

It's a blessing that I've had the opportunity to really learn about self healing and to study different diets and practice them to mastery (self proclaimed and probably to a fault). I've learned what works for me and what doesn't, and I've taken bits and pieces along the way to find myself right back to where I started...eating chicken! And probably in the near future, meat and other birds and game...hey, I'm open...(I've actually had a bite of bacon and a bite of grass fed beef the other day...who am I?!) and I always loved it! As my friends and family now say to me now, "Yay, you're back!!" I had to do it this way though...I always take the long way home...;)

What's funny is that my nutritionist told me about a year in to my vegan lifestyle that it was imperative that I incorporate eggs, fish and butter into my diet, according to my blood type and comprehensive blood work analysis. I stopped seeing her after that because I didn't think she was right / I didn't want to hear it.

And, about a month or two after diving head first into a Macrobiotic healing protocol, I found myself on the table at my Accupuncturist completely in a state of disarray. She told me that I can't ignore my genetics and heritage. She said because I am of Scottish and Irish decent, my body has been used to the traditional 'meat and potatoes' type of diet....again, something I didn't want to hear since I was so certain that Macro was the way to go!

It's really funny to look back at all the signs that were steering me back to the foods that are good for me. All the while, I had to see it through to the end to know how my body reacted to other types of food that are considered beneficial. And now, I can take a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, to make my body happy and healthy!:) I'm releasing my fears around food and allowing myself to soften and it feels so good...aaahh!

Knowledge is power and raises our awareness, so now I can eat with mindfulness and be conscious of the source (life force/prana/energy) that I'm putting into my body. Wahe Guru!
