Anti Aging Remedies

Anti Aging Remedies

About a month ago I started to look at myself in the mirror and think, 'wow I'm looking like I'm getting old!' I guess that's what happens when you're in your mid-30s! I don't know about you, but I plan on aging gracefully (and as naturally as possible)!

Spring Hair in Harmony

Spring Hair in Harmony

Oh my gosh, I had SUCH a cool experience at the latest hair color class I took by J. Beverly Hills a few weeks ago. I mean, this class was designed for me - how could I not pass up this description: "Learn how to customize and personalize every client experience through understanding the art of Feng Shui. Elements of personality are studied to show how you can achieve harmony when creating an overall 'look'". Yes Please!

An Easy, Breezy, Beauty Tip

tarte bb cream Ready for a little 'Beauty Bit'?

There's nothing worse than putting on heavy makeup when your face is sweating in the heat of summer, right?! But, we / I tend to get red, blotchy and sunburned, so it's not so 'hot' to go out looking like that now is it?

I've tried many makeup lines and pick my battles when it comes to putting any chemicals on my skin. If I can avoid it, I do (Ouidad is a non-negotiable for my hair), that's why I'm so glad to have found an all natural, mineral based, oil-free BB cream for my face!

I found it at Sephora, go figure! I had used the line, Juice Beauty, in the past, but the consistency, texture and sheer quality of Tarte Makeup makes it my better choice! It's gluten free, paraben free and eco conscious too!

Instead of using a foundation, this BB cream is formulated to be a light moisturizer, with SPF protection, sheer to buildable coverage, and is your all-in-one, go-to product for a summer glow! Check out the website for more info!

A few dabs of this, a little lip gloss, a quick swipe of mascara, and you're out the door for a fresh faced summer look!

Reviews & Rec's: Heavenly Skin Care Products

evan healy skincareI've mentioned in a previous post that one of my most favorite things to do is to get ready for bed! (What an old lady!) The reason being, that I LOVE to pamper myself with a skin care routine, unwind from the busy day, and prepare for a good night sleep! (I cherish it!)  I could never be one of those people who sleep with their makeup on! I have no idea how they do it! I like a clean face and clean skin for the sheets! Needless to say, I've used lots of amazing products in the past, but I have to say, this one takes the cake! Evan Healy has a topical ayurvedic approach to skin care, and when combined with eating right, my skin has never felt or looked this good!! I tried a sample when the COOP in Santa Monica had one of their estheticians out there offering up her advice! She recommended I use the BLUE line for sensitive skin. Oh My Amazingness! I'm officially hooked and think you should try too!

Healthy Habits: Winter Dryness, be gone!

gheeO.M.G. Ghee!!!! The amazing benefits are endless and complete! It is literally the best oil in the world! I had a client ask me a couple months back, "What do I do about this winter hair and skin?" I'm sure you are all feeling the dryness that is winter! After all, it is Vata season.

What is Vata, you ask? Vata is one of the three doshas of Ayurvedic Principles. Vata is associated with wind, the ether, by air and space, much like the characteristics of a bird flying about, nibbling and hopping and flitting! The doshas tell a story about our constitution/ our make up ~ the mind, body connection. It's an element that we are all made up of, but we have to be mindful to keep it balanced ~ too spacey? Too frazzled? Too dry? Too much vata!!!

The doshas are within us and surrounding us. According to Ayurveda, there are 3 seasons, not 4 ~ each season associated with a dosha. Winter is associated with Vata. Summer, with Pitta. Spring with Kapha.

Vata starts in the fall, when the summer breaks, and ends when the winter breaks to spring.

When spring has sprung, we experience rain to make way for May flowers, right? Well, all that rain and moisture is associated with the elements of earth (Earth Day)/re-birth/spring equinox ~ all the elements that are required to bring new life! Kapha brings that fluid moisture of new life.

Pitta is associated with the heat of the sun in the summer. Pitta has lots of energy and stamina. Too much exertion and it can burn out, however.

Too much heaviness of spring, and kapha can induce stagnation. It's a constant balancing act we juggle with our dosha loves!

I bring you this back story because now you can understand why you may have felt super dry this winter. Dry throat/cough, dry eyes, dry skin/scalp/lips/cuticles etc., its all due to an imbalance of Vata!!!!

But here's the cure: Eat GHEE!!!!! Ghee has the amazing ability to moisturize your insides so that your skin, stools, scalp, hair, throat, you name it, is healed! Your insides will be so happy! It will be like putting chapstick on your lips!

Cook your veggies with ghee, like you would olive oil. Put a teaspoon on your rice or steamed greens! Whatever you like! It's SO GOOD!

Another thing you can do is buy Sesame Oil for your skin (found in the beauty/body aisle of your health food store --not the cooking aisle).  Rub some all over your body after you shower to lock moisture in, or better yet, heat it up slightly and rub it through your scalp and hair, and all over your body before the shower. Let it sit for 5-10min and then get into the shower ~ the warm water will push the oil deeper into your body and over time, will create a barrier on your skin. Just be sure to lather up your hair with shampoo before you get it wet, otherwise the oil will never come out!;)

May you be moisturized and Vata balanced for the remaining cold months (if you're in New England), and for those of you lucky souls in the warmer climates, may you be armed for next winter!

Clear Skin, Finally!

aloe vera gel This post is for anyone who can relate to the challenges of achieving clear skin!

I went through the dreaded 'awkward' stage for longer than normal in high school, struggling with frizzy, curly hair as most of you know by now from my curly cures post, but also coupled with acne--whoa is me!! I couldn't help but compare myself to all my beautiful, thin, clear skinned friends. Why did I have to deal with this 'misfortune', is all I could think about high school insecurities!

My mom did her best to try and help me. She took me to see a dermatologist who prescribed me Retin-A, and when that didn't work well enough, tried to promote Accutane. Retin-A only left my skin red, dry and flaky, and luckily enough, my mom opted out on the Accutane recommendation due to the possibility of birth defects as a side effect.

It wasn't until I went on Birth Control at age 17 that my skin finally cleared up. Even though it balances the hormones and keeps the flare ups at bay, I've now learned that t's actually a vicious cycle because birth control creates an imbalance of healthy flora within the gut. This eventually leads to bad skin in the end because your skin is a reflection of your digestive system. There's more where that came from in this post, if you want to learn more.

Needless to say, I went off birth control at age 25 and wouldn't you know, the pimples came back to rear their ugly head! Who wants to deal with acne in their 20's?! I mean, come on, I've already dealt with this!

At that time, I had already begun living a clean and holistic lifestyle after having read Kevin Trudeau's book, "Natural Cures". This was the start of my 'cleaning house' journey, but there were many pit stops along the way before finally attaining the skin I'd always dreamed of! Granted, I still have to keep it in check, but it's amazing how your skin reflects back at you what's going on inside, and all we have to do is read the signs!

My skin finally cleared up for good after committing to a healing Macrobiotic diet of cooking for myself, eating clean foods free of dairy and sugar, and some extra tips along the way.

Here are my simple recommendations:

1. Drink Kukicha Tea everyday! It is a miraculous little Macro Secret for clearing skin! You can use it as a toner, directly on the skin, but when taken internally, it's alkalizing, anti-inflammatory agents really get the job done!

2. Drink Aloe Vera Gel daily.  O.M.G., if only I had known about this sooner! I drink 2TBS with water at breakfast and lunch. Lily of the Desert Brand is the best--the gel, not the juice!!! Flushing out your toxins with ease, by drinking this every day won't leave any room for flare ups!

3. Eat your greens daily!! Greens (kale, collards, napa cabbage, dandelion, mustard greens, etc.) reduce inflammation and alkalize the body.

The key to keeping your skin clear is all about maintaing an alkaline diet and removing toxins from your digestive tract.

Keep in mind that you may have a break-out while you're detoxing, but just keep flushing it out by drinking water and eating fiber rich foods! Your skin will be glowing in no time!

Glow on, beautiful!

Lots of love,

Clear up your skin conditions naturally with this remedy.

kukicha! no, i did not sneeze, but thank you! i'm talking about a twig tea from japan. it's something i drink everyday and has improved my digestion and skin miraculously! kukicha tea is naturally alkalizing, and acts as an astringent for your insides.

you can also use it as an exterior astringent, directly on your face as well! i used to boil a cup weekly, and keep it in a covered jar in the fridge to use as a toner morning and night while weaning myself off acne medication.

i struggled with acne in high school and the only thing that cleared up my skin was the birth control pill (a whole other reason my digestion was out of whack...i will talk more on that later). once i went off it, my skin flared up again. i tried to be patient and use all natural ingredients, etc., but there's really nothing worse than not feeling confident without makeup to hide your pimples. after all, i was 27 years old - come on, i'm over this already!

whatever is going on with your skin is a direct result of what's going on with your digestive process.

whether you have a rash, dry skin, pimples, etc., most likely there is an imbalance of bacterial flora in your stomach.

the best way to decrease the unhealthy bacteria is to limit your sugars - which come in the form of certain fruits, flours, alcohol, and the obvious forms...

you want to create an alkaline environment inside  to re-establish new healthy growing bacteria!

kukicha tea is the simplest way to do that!

my skin cleared up in about a month after drinking it daily, and using it as a toner. it also evens out skin tone, and helped clear up my dry scalp...try this little gem of a beauty secret!

Learn why you should LOVE LEMONS!

ahhh the lemon. wouldn't ya know, lemons actually alkalize you - contrary to what you may think. yes it's acidic alone, but the way it digests in your body is very alkalizing. no other citrus fruit does that.

fyi: if you are battling an overgrowth of bad bacteria, ie: candida, you don't want to be eating fruit, unless it has a low glycemic index. fruit by nature is very high in sugar - yes it's natural, but none the less, it all is acidic except for berries, apples, pears and your lemon and lime, baby!

the lemon is amazing for your skin!

and as we discussed your skin correlates with your stomach. i drink lukewarm water with the juice of half a lemon upon rising and before bed - you want to drink it on an empty stomach.

it is also very detoxifying, which can regulate your weight -aka keep you skinny.

basically if you do this daily you will be healthy - it will cure anything from asthma, to bad breath.

it supports your liver, your kidneys and purifies the blood.

if you have a hangover, drink it with a little salt and cumin seed - lemon is an anti-alcohol agent.

the reason i wanted to bring up this amazing little gem of citrus, is because my skin was getting a little itchy again the other day in one small area and if you rub lemon juice on itchy skin, wouldn't ya know, it vanishes?

but, i will say, i had been slackin' on my sea veggies the last month or so, and whenever you get itchy skin, it's a sure bet your low in minerals...

it's amazing how our physical bodies give us warning signs as to what's going on inside. what an amazing concept! BUT we have to be mindful of this - we can't just walk around reacting and shoveling food in our mouths without knowing how our bodies like it, can we?
